EV & Hybrid Roadworthy Inspections — Ballarat
Authorised Licensed Vehicle Tester (LVT) with EV category accreditation
From 1 September 2026, electric and hybrid vehicles in Victoria can only be inspected for a Certificate of Roadworthiness by a Licensed Vehicle Tester holding the new EV category, with EV-accredited examining mechanics. Most workshops don't have it.

Who Needs an EV or Hybrid Roadworthy Certificate?
You'll need a roadworthy certificate from an EV-accredited tester if you're:
- Selling or buying an electric or hybrid vehicle
- Transferring registration into a new name
- Re-registering an unregistered EV or hybrid
- Registering an imported electric vehicle
- Clearing a defect notice on an EV or hybrid
This applies to fully electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and standard hybrids — anything with an electric propulsion system operating at or above 60 volts DC. That includes everyday hybrids like a Toyota Camry, RAV4 or Corolla Hybrid, not just Teslas.
Why EV Roadworthies Now Require Special Accreditation
High-voltage vehicle systems carry real risks — electric shock, battery thermal events, and toxic gas release from damaged battery packs. Transport Victoria's new rules require EV testers to have:
- Nationally accredited high-voltage depower training (AURETH101 or AURETH011)
- Completion of the LVT EV Risk and Hazard Awareness Course
- A thermal imaging camera and carbon monoxide monitoring equipment
- A dedicated area to isolate a damaged or compromised EV
- High-voltage warning signage and safety procedures to Australian Standard AS 5732

One honest note: EV accreditation covers inspection only. By law, no roadworthy tester can repair, remove or modify high-voltage components under the EV category — so if a fault is found, we'll document it clearly with photos so you know exactly what needs attention and where to take it.

My car is a normal hybrid, not a plug-in. Does this apply to me?
Yes. Standard hybrids run high-voltage systems well above the 60-volt threshold, so they fall under the EV testing category. Mild-hybrid vehicles running 12V or 48V systems generally sit below the threshold and are tested as conventional vehicles — call us if you're unsure and we'll confirm from your model.

Can any mechanic still do my EV's roadworthy?
Not after 1 September 2026. Only Licensed Vehicle Testers with the EV category on their licence, using EV-accredited examining mechanics, can lawfully inspect an EV or hybrid for a roadworthy certificate.

Does an EV roadworthy take longer?
Slightly. The mandatory EV checklist and additional safety checks add time on top of a standard inspection, so we recommend booking ahead.

What if my EV fails on a high-voltage item?
We'll give you a clear, photographed report of the fault. Repairs to high-voltage systems must be carried out by appropriately qualified EV repairers — we can point you in the right direction, then complete your re-inspection once it's fixed.
